Zach is home from the hospital and doing well!

Last Tuesday, Zach went to MUSC to have surgery to repair his right kidney. After 3.5 hours, Dr. Ian Aaronson came out to let us know that Zach went through the procedure as well as could be expected.

Apparently, his right ureter (which connects the bladder to the kidney) was wrapped around his right kidney. This caused a constriction that stopped urine from flowing from the kidney. The ureter also connected to the kidney too high and that was repaired as well.

The first photo is from the day after surgery. Morphine will do this to a baby boy but he didn't stay that way for long. The second one is from Wednesday. One day ahead of schedule, he was awake, weaned off of the heavy drugs and doing much better - smiling and laughing, actually.

They originally had our discharge day on Saturday but he did so well that they released us a day earlier. While he was there, he made friends with nurses, had three roommates and spent some time in a children's play atrium. PiPi (Grandpa Bob) came from Texas to be here for Zach and as always, Grandma June was bedside if Zach needed her.

Thanks to the thoughts and prayers of family and friends and the good Lord above us all, Zach is better and this should take care of any issues he may have with his kidney. The other thing is that he'll be on antibiotics for another 6 months. A small price to pay to know that the pyeloplasty was a success and his kidney will be healed.
